Do women face a glass ceiling in the blogosphere? Organizers and attendees of BlogHer, the three-year-old conference attended by more than a thousand female bloggers, think so.
Last year, a study co-authored by BlogHer and Compass Partners found that 36 million women (about 11 percent of all US women) participate in the blogosphere each week, and 15 million of them have their own blogs.
Yet, when Techcult, a technology Web site, ranked its top 100 Web celebrities, only 11 of them were women. And last year, Forbes.com created a similar list, naming just 3 women on its list of 25.
"It's disheartening and frustrating," said Allison Blass, a BlogHer attendee whose personal blog at www.lemonade-life.com is about living with Type 1 diabetes.
Created in 2005 to help female bloggers gain exposure, this year's San Francisco event "has since evolved into a corporate-sponsored Oprah-inflected version of a '60s consciousness-raising group," reported the New York Times.
"These days, there is money to be made, fame to be earned and influence to be gained," reports NYT. "And though women and men are creating blogs in roughly equal numbers, many women at the conference... belie(ve) that they are not taken as seriously as their male counterparts... Nor, they said, were they making much money, even though corporations seem to be making money from them."
The conference hosted seminars like "How to Take Names and Be Taken Seriously as a Political Blogger," where many women said that their male colleagues and major media groups undercut them, and linked to them less often.
Megan McArdle, who blogs for the Atlantic monthly about economic issues, did no attend the conference, but noted "Women get dismissed in ways that men don't." "(McArdle) added that women are taught not to be aggressive and analytical in the way that the political blogosphere demands, and are more likely to receive blog comments on how they look, rather than what they say," reported NYT.
Confronting the issue head on, and encouraging those women fighting the tide, Enkay recently created the first Top 100 Female Bloggers list and NxE created a 50 most influential female bloggers list, earlier this month.

사실 이 유리천장은 얼마나 견고한지, 여성들에게 좌절을 안겨주기 일쑤다.
정치, 사회, 문화 등 여러 곳들이 여전히 젠더화되어있다. 아직도 여성이라는 이유 하나만으로 사회진출에 한계를 느끼고, 주장에 한계를 느끼고, 진출분야에 한계를 느끼고, 승진에 한계를 느낀다.
현재 여성과 정치라는 수업을 듣고 있는데, 이 수업을 듣다보면 급진페미니스트는 절대 아니지만 정말 열받는다.
우리 사회는 아직도 여성들을 정치인이나, 언론인, 학생, 회사원 등으로 평가하기 이전에 "여성성"이라는 겉모습을 통해 평가된다. 남성과 여성이 다를게 없는데, 사실 능력으로 치자면(매년 고시 합격률을 봐라) 여성의 능력은 남성보다 뛰어나면 뛰어나지 모자라지 않다. 그런데도 오랜 세월동안 하나의 문화나 체제처럼 굳어진 가부장적 남성우월주의는 우리 사회의 깊은 곳에 깔려있는 무시 못할 걸림돌로 작용한다.
여기 유리천장을 깨기 위해 모인 여성블로거들이 있다. 웹상에서의 여성블로거들의 모임인 blogher.com. 컨퍼런스도 개최하고 사이트에 여러가지 글을 포스팅한다. 유명 블로거의 글은 신문사가 신문에 기고할 정도로 그 영향력이 크다. 또한 블로그에 올린 글들은 누구나 접근이 가능하고 쉬울 뿐만 아니라, 쉽게 이슈화 될 수 있고, 쉽게 피드백 되어 의견을 공유할 수 있다. blogher는 이런 점들을 이용하여 여성들이 사회적 편견과 부딪쳐 싸울 수 있는 목소리를 내기 위한 장소이다.

Nicolas Kristof, of the New York Times, recently posted in his On the Ground blog, "Here at The New York Times, we still have all of our foreign bureaus -- partly because our strategy is to compete for readers who seek international news and analysis -- but most newspapers and TV networks have been pulling back. Only four American newspapers now have foreign desks."
Demotix, a new citizen journalism site, has been launched to fill the gap created when the vast majority of news outlets rely on press releases and wire services.
The site, somewhat uniquely, is trying to position itself as an intermediary for photojournalists, a source bank where media outlets can select images, buy them (for between $80-$1,600) and the site splits the revenue from the photo with the citizen photographer who uploaded it.

인터넷 시장이 발전하고 인터넷이란 공간에서 우리에게 다양한 정보를 제공하는 블로거들이 늘어나면서, 기존의 거대 언론사가 아닌 일반 시민에 의한 정보전달의 장이 커지게 되었다. 일반 시민들에 의해서 만들어진 citizen journalism은 단순 정보뿐만 아니라 그 질과 양의 측면에서 기존 언론사에 비해 뒤지지 않은 뉴스들을 인터넷 저널리즘이 가지고 있는 가장 큰 장점인 신속성을 이용해 제공하고 있다. 이렇게 발전한 citizen journalism은 누구나 쉽게 참여할 수 있다는 접근성에서의 장점과 누구든지 글을 올려 그 글에 대해 바로 토론장을 열 수 있다는 인터넷 공간의 장점을 이용해 나날이 성장해 가고 있다.
우리나라의 대표적인 citizen journalism의 사례는 오마이뉴스다. 오마이뉴스는 기존 언론사보다 오히려 더 신속하게 뉴스를 전달하고 시민들에 의해서 작성되었다는 것에서 친밀감을 주며, 어느 부분에선 기자보다 더 대단한 전문성을 가지고 올라오는 글들도 있다. 그래서 처음 오마이뉴스가 등장했을 때 사람들은 그 신선함에 감탄하며 오마이뉴스를 이용했다. 그러나 지금 오마이뉴스는 처음 등장했을 때에 비해 그 영향력이 감소하고 있는 추세이다. 떠도는 말로 오마이뉴스의 수명이 다했다는 말이 나올 정도다. 그렇다면 이런 citizen journalism이 계속성을 가지고 제대로 운영되기 위해서는 어떻게 해야할까? 그리고 외국에서의 citizen journalism의 장은 어느정도의 크기를 가지고 영향력을 행사하고 있을까?
새로운 citizen jounalism site인 Demotix는 기존 언론사의 대다수 보도자료가 통신사에 의지하여 보도되는 사이의 틈을 채우기 위해 만들어진 사이트이다. 이 사이트는 독특하게도 업로드된 사진을 판매하여 그 수익금을 사진을 올린 citizen photographer들이 나누어 가지는 체제로 사이트를 운영하고 있다. 이렇듯 여러 citizen journalism site에서 생산된 뉴스들과 사진 및 정보들은 판매가 될 그 가치가 높다. → Opinion: bloggers are not just a cheap news source
그렇기에 citizen journalism이 성장할 수 있었고, 지금도 그 영향력의 크기가 증가하고 있는 것이다.

앞으로 citizen journalism이 기존 언론사가 다루지 못한 다양한 각도로 사건을 보고 생각할 수 있는 인터넷 공론의 장으로 발전할 수 있는 방법은 무엇일까? 오마이뉴스가 사그러들지 않고 다시 되살아나 또는 오마이뉴스를 능가하는 새로운 citizen jounalism site가 생겨나 우리나라에서도 성숙한 citizen journalism이 꽃피우게 할 수 있는 방법은 무엇일까? 그러기 위해선 전문적인 블로거들의 활동과 이를 뒷받침해 줄 수 있는 제도 등이 생겨나야 하지 않을까 생각해 본다. 물론 시민 저널리스트 자신의 적극적인 활동이 기본이 되지 않는다면 어떤 제도나 특권도 도움이 되지 않을 것이다. 즉, 시민저널리스트들 개개인이 자부심을 갖고 활동하면 우리나라도 시민저널리즘이 새로운 저널리즘의 장으로 부각되는 날이 오지 않을까 싶다.
